Franchises Focus on Global Expansion Strategies


IFA took its International Symposium on Franchising around the world--literally–when it co-hosted this year’s event with the Franchising and Licensing Association of Singapore Oct. 21 and 22. Nearly 70 franchise industry executives who lead global franchise expansion for their businesses participated in the two-day event at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel/Resort.

IFA 2006 Chairman Lawrence “Doc” Cohen, CFE, (president of DOC & Associates), served as program moderator, which was
conducted in conjunction with FLA’s Annual Franchise Expo.Winston Tang, V-Cool International regional executive, was a keynote speaker and described developing and implementing sales and marketing strategies that achieve results in international expansion.
  Franchise Business UnitDirector of Development for YUM! Brands Henry Saliba provided attendees an overview on sustaining an organizations brand presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Other sessions included programs about “Adapting Your Concept for International Markets,” “Building Strong Franchise Relationships Across Borders,” “Entering the Markets in North America and South America,” “Protecting the Brand through Standards Enforcement” and “Financing Options for International Franchising.”

The program concluded with a panel of experts that enabled participants to engage with leading franchise executives on best practices associated with taking a franchise system into new global markets.
 The panel was moderated by Cohen and featured IFA International Committee Chairman Ned Lyerly, CKE Restaurants executive vice president of global franchise development;
 FLA Chairman Dr. T. Chandroo, Modern Montessori International COO; and Sakae Holdings Ltd.CEO Douglas Foo.

 Bret Lowell, CFE, DLA Piper US LLP partner, was a featured speaker who addressed structuring and negotiating the right deal.
 Other symposium speakers offered valuable insights to attendees: Rod Young, consultant, executive director, DC Strategy and board member of Cartridge World, shared steps on how to adapt your concept for international markets; Albert Kong, CFE, Asiawide Franchise Consultants CEO and Melissa Bernheim, Smoothie King (North America) general counsel, discussed details concerning recent developments affecting franchise businesses around the world;Bill Edwards, CFE, Edwards Global Services CEO, and Mike Powers, CFE, Smoothie King vice president of business development, provided advice on entering markets in North and South America.
